Located in Kypseli, Athens, Beetroot combines a bar and grocery shop within a compact interior shaped by a series of precise architectural interventions. Furniture and display are conceived as a continuous system, with custom elements integrated into both the shopfront and the interior. The entrance and half of the existing shopfront were redesigned to incorporate a folding window above a built-in seat clad in red ceramic tiles. Its panels retract fully to the sides, bringing the seating area into direct relation with the pavement and extending the interior towards the street. The same integration of architecture and furniture continues in the black steel railing around the stairwell, which incorporates a bench with the wire-mesh infill serving as its backrest. The grocery display extends this system across the remaining half of the frontage. A full-height framework of reinforcing steel bars accommodates movable boxes and shelves, allowing the arrangement of products to change within a fixed grid. Its open structure adds depth to the shopfront while preserving views into the interior. The geometry of the framework is echoed in a full-height mirror on the rear wall, where the grid becomes progressively denser towards the ceiling. The changing subdivisions fragment reflections of the shopfront and seating, while the mirrored surface extends the apparent depth of the bar. Selected surfaces from the previous use are retained as part of the composition. The exposed concrete ceiling and columns, unfinished walls and visible services establish a raw, utilitarian setting for the stainless-steel bar and custom metalwork. The contrast between these irregular surfaces and the controlled geometry of the new elements is complemented by a consistent use of colour. Deep red tones recur across the ceramic tiles, painted frames and faux-leather upholstery, bringing warmth and visual continuity from the shopfront through to the interior.
